The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to increase 20 per cent seats in universities and degree colleges, higher education department officials said.
A decision to this effect was taken during a review meeting of registrars and higher education officials called by the state's Higher Education Minister Rakeshdhar Tripathi on Monday, they said.
During the meeting the minister said that in order to meet the demand of admission in higher education institutions, the government has decided to increase 20 to 25 per cent seats in under-graduate and post-graduate courses.
"While 20 per cent increase will be done by the government, vice-chancellors will have power to increase another five per cent considering the situation and interest of the students," Tripathi said.
He said that since the pass percentage in the Class 12th board examination this year was unprecedented, Chief Minister Mayawati had directed officials to ensure that maximum students get admission in universities and degree colleges.
"Efforts should be made to ensure that all results are announced by June 30, 2010," the minister said.
He also directed the registrars to fill backlog posts of SC category by September 30 and dispose of all cases pertaining to affiliation by July 15.
Tripathi directed that adequate arrangements should be made to check ragging on the campus and said, "Directives issued by the Supreme Court on ragging should be followed strictly and stern action should be taken against those indulging in such activities."
