UTTAR PRADESH Governor T V Rajeswar on Sunday apprised Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil of the law and order situation in the state, while a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation met President A P J Abdul Kalam to demand imposition of Central rule ahead of the assembly election.
Rajeswar briefed Patil about the recent desecration of B R Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur, which led to rioting in Maharashtra. His meeting with Patil was seen as an important development in the wake of the demand from political parties, including the Congress, for the dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government.
Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had criticised Rajeswar recently, alleging that efforts were under way to destabilise his government before the election.
BJP deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj led a delegation of UP leaders, including Keshari Nath Tripathi, Kalraj Mishra, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Vinay Katiyar, to Rashtrapati Bhawan. The BJP leaders handed over a memorandum to Kalam, listing reasons why President's rule should be imposed in UP.
