The state government said on Thursday that it had written to the Centre seeking its approval for the prosecution. The Anti-Corruption Organisation had investigated 42 cases of large-scale corruption in police recruitment in 2005 and 2006 under Samajwadi Party rule. It had recommended the prosecution of the members of all the recruitment boards.

The government has approved the prosecution of B.B. Bakhshi, Akhilesh Mehrotra, Daljit Singh Chaudhury, Ramendra Vikram Singh, BS Tripathi, Satish Kumar Mathur, Chavinath Singh, Sunil Kumar Gupta, RN Yadav, Shailendra Pratap Singh, Malkhan Singh Yadav and BK Agarwal. Daljit Singh Chaudhury, on deputation to the Centre, is personal secretary to Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal.

These 12 officers presided over 24 recruitment boards. Experts say the government can file chargesheets against the officers for trial under the Indian Penal Code but needs the Centre’s approval for prosecution under the Anti-Corruption Act.
