Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption personnel raided the premises belonging to former Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments minister, KR Periakaruppan and former Adi Dravidar Welfare minister A Tamilarasi.

Raids against Periakaruppan were conducted at 11 places, including his and kin's residences, farm houses in Sivaganga, Dindigul and Chennai districts.

DVAC in a statement claimed Periakaruppan had accumulated movable and immovable assets in his name and in his family's to the tune of Rs 1.11 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income during May 13, 2006 to March 31, 2010 while he was Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister.

The personnel searched the residence of Tamilarasi in Madurai and her brother's house in Paramakudi and questioned her and her husband about their assets, police said.

The cases against the two were registered following inquiries on specific information that they had allegedly accumulated assets disproportionate to their known sources of income under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.

Periakaruppan, now MLA, and Tamilarasi are the latest among several DMK leaders and former ministers besides MLAs to face police and DVAC action either on land grab charges or allegations of disproportionate assets, after the AIADMK government came to power in April last year.

DVAC had earlier conducted raids at the houses of nine former DMK ministers, J Anbazhagan, MLA and former legislator B Ranganathan.
