THOUGH VINIT Singh on Friday lost at the SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2006, yet he was a winner in his own right. Winner, because he won crores of hearts across India.

The local lad lost the “Voice of India” title what many believed more because of the country-wide poll (through SMS, phone-in and e-mail) which tilted the scale in favour of Assam’s Debojit by less than 1 per cent votes. Debojit polled 27757733 votes against Vinit’s 27298268 votes.

“Now my goal is to sing well, learn more and establish myself within a year so that everyone forgets that I lost on account of votes. I will win hearts with my hard work and performance,” said Vinit after the grand finale. Vinit was also elated with the last-moment regional support he got in terms of voting but was a wee bit sad it happened so late. “We were not as aggressive as Debo Bhaiyya’s home supporters were.

People of Assam and surrounding region voted very aggressively for him. But, I am not disheartened,” he said.

Vinit said he was indebted to those who voted for him and brought him this far.

“Votes from neutral zones pegged me as a winner but I accept the final result very gracefully,” he said HT on phone. While Vinit’s brother Vivek said it was “bad luck”, his father Tej Narain Singh said, “Vinit in my opinion has won on the basis of talent but lost out due to voting. We are happy for the tremendous last-minute voting.” Lucknow girl Twinkle Bajpai, who was among the last eight finalists on the show, told HT, “I am in a Catch-22 situation. I would have been more happy if Vinit had won but I also did not want Debo to lose as he is from my ‘gharana’ (Ismail Durbar). This show has given us lots of recognition all over India.”Senior VP of Zee network, Ashish Kaul said, “It was a question of choosing between two talented people. Debo scored heavily in votes. I am disappointed Vinit lost as he is a great singer and my favourite. I’m sure he is the next singing sensation!” Amen.
