We must stop being afraid of N-deal: Rahul

Against the backdrop of the Left and BJP's opposition to the India-US nuclear deal, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said it was time India stopped being scared of the agreement.

“On the nuclear deal, my thinking is that in India, we need not be scared or lack confidence in dealing with anything or anybody,” he said during an interraction with students of TMA Pai Institute, organised by the National Student Union of India. Rahul, on the campaign trail in poll-bound Karnataka, said in fact, other countries have now realised the strength of India. “I speak to foreign leaders and I get the sense that they have realised and recognised a united and confident India.”

The MP asked the student community to be the engine of advancement of the country and help the poor. “Students like you are going to make us advanced. We can only advance if we have confidence.” He said the need of the hour was to increase opportunities for the poor. “Connect with the poor. We must open up opportunities for them so they can dream the same dream that you and I do.”

At Nanjangud near Mysore, where he was attending a function, Rahul called on the youth to join politics. “At 37, I am an old person in India. Majority of India is younger than me.” Noting that 70 per cent of the population is young, he said that while old (people) are to be respected for their experience, there is value and strength in youth.

Around 30 minutes before he arrived at the venue, SPG personnel told journalists they would have to leave as no coverage was needed.
