West Bengal: Police constable shoots parents with service rifle

Drama unfolded at Chathinasole Gopivallabpur, a small hamlet in district of West Midnapore, when Abinash Patra, a police constable attempted suicide after opening fire at his parents with his service rifle.

Drama unfolded at Chathinasole Gopivallabpur, a small hamlet in district of West Midnapore, when Abinash Patra, a police constable attempted suicide after opening fire at his parents with his service rifle.

When officials from the local police station went to arrest him he also fired on the police forcing them to resort to asking him to surrender.

“Around 2pm the locals informed us that a constable has shot his parents with his service rifle and is presently hiding inside his home. When a team from the local police station rushed to the spot, he opened fire on them,” said a senior police officer.

The drama, staged for around three hours, ended when police managed to get inside the house and found Patra – who is posted as junior constable with Kotwali police station in West Midnapore – lying in a pool of blood. He also tried commit suicide with the rifle.

Patra has been admitted at a local hospital.
