The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has accorded an in-principle approval to the Gurgaon expressway construction company, DSC, for setting up split toll plazas with eight lanes on each side on Delhi border.
The DSC officials claim that the waiting time at the existing 32-lane toll plaza would reduce considerably after the new plazas are built.
An addition of 16 lanes would take the total number of lanes to 48, making the toll plaza biggest in Asia.
Shaken by a whopping increase of 43 per cent in traffic volume in the last one year on the 8-lane Gurgaon Expressway, the DSC had approached the NHAI in December last year for their permission to widen the existing toll plaza.
The DSC had also given a presentation in the office of NHAI Chairman Brijeshwar Singh.
The current waiting time at cash lanes in India's biggest 32-lane toll plaza is about five minutes during peak hours.
Confirming that the DSC had received an in-principle approval for the split toll plazas, its Vice-President (operations) Sachin Sharma, said, "After the split toll plazas are constructed, the waiting time would reduce to 3-3.5 minutes at cash lanes. And at tag lanes, the time would come down to almost zero minutes."

{{/usCountry}}With land already available on the right hand side of the expressway (Gurgaon to Delhi side), the DSC would not have to deal with the problem of lack of space, he said.
"We had decided to add more lanes to the plaza in January itself," Sharma said.
“In phase-I, we will construct on the right hand side only. We need 12-15 acres of land on the other side (towards Ambiance Mall) for another eight lanes and the Haryana Government has been requested to provide the same.”
