In a horrifying incident, a woman was chained to a tree and burnt alive in an Unnao village, bordering Rae Bareli district on Saturday.

The woman’s charred body was found chained to the tree and her clothes and footwear were found a few metres away, in Bharthipur village.

Speaking to HT, Ramesh Chandra Dubey, circle officer, Bighapur, said: “It appears that the killers were more than two people and the victim put up a strong fight before she was killed.”

Manoj Pasi, brother of the victim Chedana, 31, identified her body and later registered a murder case against her husband Laloo Pasi. He told police that Laloo was having an extra-marital affair, which his sister had opposed. Police said Laloo had married two women earlier but divorced them before marrying Chedana.

“The couple had a fight on Friday night and Laloo beat up Chedana mercilessly. She then called up her elder sister Vidyawati and narrated her ordeal,” Manoj told police. Vidyawati and Manoj live in nearby Raghuraj Purwa village in Rae Bareli district.

The husband was taken into police custody but he pleaded innocence during questioning.
