A youth was shot dead by the army in Sibsagar district of upper Assam on the suspicion of being an ULFA activist in Charaideo sub-division triggering protests by local people while police received reports that ULFA's B company was planning subversive activities in the district.
Bisnu Tati, a tribal youth belonging to the Singhalibum tea estate, was gunned down by army jawans on Friday suspecting him to be an ULFA militant, police said.
Refusing to accept the army claims, villagers staged protests and dharna against the death of the youth claiming he was an innocent person.
The protestors refused to perform the last rites of the slain youth and demanded immediate official inquiry into the matter.
The situation was brought under control after the administration assured the villagers that an inquiry will be ordered into the firing incident, official sources said.
In another development, the Superintendent of Police, Sibsagar, Shymal Saikia said a 15-member group of ULFA's B 'company' of the 28 'battalion' was camping in Charaideo sub-division and planning subversive activities.
The members armed with six AK-47 rifles, three machine guns and one assault rifle were taking shelter along the Assam-Nagaland border, he said.
