A slew of protests kept the Barasat police busy on Tuesday when villagers of Kamduni and other anti-rape activists staged a blockade at the crucial Champadali crossing and members of the Youth Congress gathered in front of a police station to submit a memo.
In another development, lawyers at Barasat court have decided not to represent any of the eight persons arrested for the gruesome rape and murder of the girl.
A team of Barasat Court Bar Association, too, staged a protest outside the court premises and later visited the rape’s victim house.
Chaos ruled Champadali crossing when supporters of Hindu Sanghati and Sutia Pratibadi Mancha, along with a section of Kamduni villagers, blocked the road, demanding proper policing and security for women.The blockade led to a scuffle between the police and the protesters. It also created traffic jam in Barasat.
Later, the protesters met the district magistrate in his office and submitted a memo.
In another development, a Youth Congress delegation, along with some of the villagers of Kamduni, submitted a deputation at the Barasat police station, protesting police inaction and surging crime rates in the area.
The victim’s father and brother, while participating in a protest, reiterated on Tuesday that they do not want the consolation of a government job for a family member at the cost of the girl’s life. “We want stringent punishment for the culprits,” the victim’s father said.

{{/usCountry}}The ripples of the Barasat protest had reached the doorstep of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, literally, as representatives of a rights’ body sat on a dharna at her secretariat office in Writers’ buildings on Monday.
Meanwhile, Barasat erupted in protests for the fourth day in a row and a PIL was filed at Calcutta High Court urging the court’s intervention in restoring law and order.
