Apprehending that he might create trouble on Saturday during the fifth phase of the Assembly polls, South 24-Parganas police has forwarded the summons issued by a court to a Trinamool worker from Maheshtala, Ratan Kumar Roy, unaware of the fact that Roy died two years ago.
The error was detected on Thursday when the family members of the deceased Trinamool worker received the summons sent by Maheshtala police station, asking Roy to report there and sign a Rs 500-bond. The family members lodged a complaint with the police late on Thursday.
Roy died on June 11, 2014 and on the same day, he was cremated. But according to the summons, Roy and a few of his supporters tried to create a ruckus on April 11, 2016 at Akra in Maheshtala. In fact, the police had even lodged a complaint against Roy which contained the statements of two eyewitnesses.
Following a complaint from family members, the police started an inquiry and are probing the actions of the investigating officer.
“In the 2011 Assembly elections, the police had to send summons to Roy. At that time, a rival faction of the Trinamool had lodged a complaint against him. This time, too, they lodged the complaint and the police, without verifying anything, lodged the FIR where Roy was shown as absconding and then forwarded the summons,” said Suman Parui, a local Trinamool worker.
