CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told the state committee meeting of CPI(M) on Saturday that the Left would demand withdrawal of the UPA government's decision to decontrol petroleum prices.

Karat also informed the recently-concluded Central Committee meeting of the party in Delhi that a country-wide movement would also be launched in August in support of the demand of ensuring food security and against the Centre's decision to allow foreign direct investment in retail trade, a press statement issued by the party said.

Party state secretary Biman Bose discussed the issue relating to the rectification programme and the discussion will continue on Sunday, it said.

Besides Karat, CPI(M) Politburo members Sitaram Yechuri and S R Pillai were also present.
