Why are speed breakers painted?
Speed breakers or speed bumps in your society or on the roads near your house are painted black or yellow and black, and there is a reason behind it. In some instances, white stripes are painted on the asphalt to create a contrast. Roads in some countries are clearly more dangerous than in others. Therefore, speed breakers are there to reduce speed and maintain efficient traffic flow by reducing speed differences among road users.

Speed breakers are intentionally painted with contrasting colours in alternating bands of yellow and black, or white stripes on asphalt, to ensure the bump stands out sharply against the road surface under all lighting conditions. For nighttime driving, special luminous or reflective paints containing tiny glass beads are used to bounce headlight beams back to the driver.
These clear markings allow drivers to spot the speed breaker from a safe distance. This gives them enough time to apply the brakes gradually rather than slam on them abruptly, preventing rear-end collisions, passenger injuries, or vehicle damage.
The transport authority in India mandates that speed breakers must be designated with paint and warning signage to qualify as safe traffic control structures. Therefore, any unmarked speed breaker is illegal.
Speed bumps and rules in India
Speed breakers must be used only in urban areas for minor roads and residential areas, and are not recommended on high-speed roads. Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines specify that a correctly designed speed breaker should slow vehicles without jolting them. If your car scrapes or jumps, the bump is almost certainly illegal.
Moreover, courts, including the Delhi High Court, have clearly stated that residents cannot create traffic infrastructure on their own. Citizens must apply to the traffic authorities, who assess and approve requests through proper procedures.
