The Income Tax (I-T) department’s investigations office is prepared to deal with any reported movement of unaccounted money ahead of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to the held in the state from April 11 to 29. A control room, which operates 24x7, was set up on Monday by the I-T Pune directorate.
The directorate, headed by Sandeep Kapoor, principal director, will send a daily report to the Election Commission. The Pune unit will be headed by Ravi Prakash, additional director of income tax (DIT)(investigations).
The directorate has set up 51 quick response teams (QRT) in all polling regions to respond to the calls. The QRTs are aiming at a response time of 30 minutes, Kapoor said.
“Of the 48 constituencies, six are in Mumbai and others are outside Mumbai. The jurisdiction of Pune directorate covers the other 42 constituencies. We have appointed five jurisdictional nodal officers. Of the five, Pune region has six constituencies, Nagpur has ten, Nashik has 14, Kolhapur has seven and Thane has five. Besides these 42 constituencies, we also have nine airports in our jurisdiction,” said Ajay Modi, additional director of Income Tax investigations office.
“Anybody can call us. The last time even though we received a lot of inputs, there were hardly any workable input. The number of hoax calls was high. Therefore, cooperation from citizens is important,” said Modi. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the IT directorate had collected ₹5-6 crore in unaccounted cash form.
