According to Nutan the wife of IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, the provocation behind the threat could have been the FIR lodged by her against state Mines minister Gayatri Prajapati.

Nutan, who is also an RTI activist, had claimed that Prajapati and others of tried to frame her and her husband in false cases including those of rape, after she had filed a complaint with the Lokayukta against the minister.

In a dramatic sideshow, hours after Thakur filed his complaint, a woman walked into the women's police station in Lucknow and recorded a statement saying she was one of the 'rape victims'. Police said the statement will be used while investigating Nutan's complaint against Prajapati.

Thakur, who has been assisting his wife in raising social issues, released an audio tape on Friday purportedly containing the voice of the SP chief.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Lucknow, Rajesh Pandey said the matter will be probed to find out the genuineness of the audio tape released by Thakur.

Nutan, who is an RTI activist, claimed that when her husband went to Hazratganj police station to lodge an FIR, SHO Vijaymal Yadav refused him. But, on the IPS officer's insistence, he received a copy of the complaint and said the matter will be inquired.

Refuting the allegation, SP leader CP Rai said, "I have not heard the audio but such an allegation appears to be doctored. He (Mulayam) is such a senior leader. I know him for past 30 years...He can never threaten anyone."
