Even though chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh, the family of the Delhi gangrape victim regrets the fact that no official from the UP government has found time to visit the family that has been under constant stress due to the statements made by politicians, social workers and heads of various organisations.
Having no one to fall back on and the compensation money yet to reach them, the family now wants some space to recuperate from the trauma.
“We don’t even have any moral support, leave aside any official support from the UP government. Till date, no one from the state government has approached us,” father of the girl told HT on phone from Delhi.
Only Neeraj Shekhar, Ballia MP, had visited us once, but his was a courtesy visit as our family was not in a position to talk to anyone, he said.
The girl’s brother said: “From now, my aim is to become an engineer as desired by my sister. I know I am a brave girl’s brother and this feeling would inspire me to take competitive exams with renewed determination.”
“I am worried about the condition of my parents. My father, who is a loader with a private firm, has not gone to work since the incident. My mother is not keeping well. All the money is gone and my father is also not sure whether his job is safe or not. In this situation, our future is not certain,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}On being asked whether the family would like to relocate, if a job is offered to them in UP, the brother said: “Currently my education is going on in Delhi and it would be hard for my parents to move anywhere else. But if my father is offered a good job in Delhi itself, it would be more helpful for us.”
The girl’s father is also worried about the huge legal expenses in the days to come. “We are in a hand to mouth situation and that’s why it would be hard for us to pay the high fees of lawyers. But I will spend all my money to get justice for my daughter who wanted to live with dignity.”
Reacting to people’s comments on the incident, the victim’s brother said: “It only adds to stress. We want some time to come out of the trauma. I will not like anyone to make any negative comment for the girl who battled the barbarians bravely. She was a braveheart and I am proud to be her brother.”
