Uttar Pradesh’s new secretariat building – Lok Bhawan – housing the chief minister’s office draws heavily from the architecture of the Vidhan Bhawan built in 1928. The need for the building was felt as the 90-year-old Vidhan Bhawan lacked sufficient space to accommodate offices of increasing number of officers and employees.

The Lok Bhawan, constructed at a cost of Rs 601.89 crore, has arrangement for 1,330 officers and employees. Embellished with Italian marble, vitrified tiles and wooden flooring etc, the building also has stone cladding and reflective glasses for sound insulation.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav inaugurated the new secretariat, Lok Bhawan, along with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and his ministerial colleagues.

The spic and span building has escalators to enable officers and employees reach different places at a faster pace. It would also be equipped to provide ‘paperless office’ and wi-fi facilities etc. Other features of the state-of-the-art building include an auditorium, VVIP lounge, record room, CCTV control room, media waiting room and a hall.
