Opening with an extended shoot-’em-up sequence involving an experienced field agent (Jude Law) on the trail of a portable nuclear device, Spy brims with a healthy dose of pratfalls, punch lines and profanity.
The storyline does wear off in the latter half which is replete with preposterous twists and turns. Moreover, the undue reliance on slow motion shots is irritating.
Sporting a series of dowdy disguises and equipped with gizmos which would turn 007 green with envy (just kidding), the undervalued spook vanquishes a battalion of baddies. To everyone’s surprise, the feisty femme displays more courage and determination than any of her male counterparts. Top-lining a predominantly macho genre flick McCarthy shares cracking chemistry with her co-stars. Jason Statham deserves special mention for his hilarious performance as a rogue agent.
Spy is recommended for those in the mood for escapist fun.
