Unidentified men stole Rs1.56 crore from a cash van parked outside a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM in Dharavi on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, when the cash attendant and watchman were depositing money in the ATM on Sant Rohidas Marg, a few men approached the driver, claiming that there were a few currency notes on the road, which could be possibly his.

As the driver got out of the vehicle, two men stole the trunk containing cash and escaped, said police.

The CCTV footage of a shop in the vicinity shows two men walking with the trunk.

The police suspect a vehicle may have been used later to escape.

RD Shinde, additional commissioner of police, central region, said, “The three were untrained. They did not take basic precautionary measures. The trunk was not locked and was left unattended.”

The police are verifying the employees’ statements and are trying to ascertain the sequence of events.

The police are also investigating whether an insider was involved in the theft.

The incident has raised concerns over the security of ATM vans, which are used to ferry large amounts of cash.
