While Mohammad Ayaan’s family accused the fitness centre of negligence, the owner said security guards and CCTV cameras constantly monitored the pool. The Mumbra police have registered a case of accidental death, and said they were looking into how the boy drowned.

Ayaan was visiting his aunt’s home at Amrut Nagar in Mumbra on Tuesday. After lunch, Ayaan and his cousin Mohammad Umaan, 13, went to use the pool at Future Fitness, the fitness centre.

Umaan said there were at least 30 children at the pool but there was nobody to supervise them. “I told Ayaan to swim in the children’s pool where the water is shallow, and to use a safety tube,” Umaan said. He added that as there was no lifeguard around, no one saw Ayaan enter the big pool.

“Some gym members saw him unconscious, pulled him out and tried to resuscitate him,” Umaan said. “A lot of time was wasted before anybody called an ambulance or informed the police.” The incident took place around 3.30 pm, while the police said the hospital called them at 4.15 pm.

“There are security guards at the pool to supervise and take care of the children. We also have a CCTV camera installed at the pool. There is no question of negligence,” he said.

“We have registered an accidental death report, even though the victim’s family claims the death was because of negligence,” said Poonam Chavan, sub-inspector, Mumbra police station. “We will investigate at the gym, check CCTV footage and speak to witnesses to confirm if there was any negligence.”

Ayaan lived with his parents and a younger sister.
