17-year-old and friend killed after car hits truck, near Mumbai

The two were residents of Nimboli village in rural Bhiwandi, and had gone to drop their friend in the four-wheeler.

A 17-year-old and his friend were killed in a road accident after their car lost control, hitting a divider and a truck that was coming from the opposite direction on the Mumbai-Nashik highway at Bhiwandi. The 33-year-old truck driver, Santosh Maruti Sarode, suffered injuries.

According to the police, the accident took place on Thursday.

The teenager, Rakesh Gulvi who was an SSC student, and his 20-year-old friend, Ajay Gulvi, who was driving the car, were residents of Nimboli village in rural Bhiwandi. They had gone to drop their friend in the four-wheeler.

“They dropped their friend and were returning to Nimboli village. While they were on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, Ajay lost control of the car and hit the divider. The vehicle flipped in the air and hit a truck coming from the opposite side,” said police officer V Shinde, who is investigating the case.

However, the truck driver claimed that Ajay was speeding the car.

Passers-by alerted the police after which Ajay and Rakesh were taken to a hospital, where they were declared dead. Sarode was admitted there.

“Ajay had recently learned driving and did not have a licence. We are tracing the person who gave them the four-wheeler. The car is entirely damaged and nobody has come to claim it. We have sent a letter to the regional transport office (RTO) to trace the car owner and will take legal action against him, if found guilty,” Shinde said.
