Aurangabad farmer’s heart gives new lease of life to 56-year-old Nashik woman

The donor was a 30-year-old farmer who was declared brain dead on Tuesday at a government-run hospital. The man’s mother decided to donate his organs after she was counselled by experts.

On Tuesday afternoon, doctors performed the city’s 43rd heart transplant for a 56-year-old woman from Nashik, who was battling a fatal heart condition. The facility had started in August 2015.

“The recipient had a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy which was life threatening and was put on a waiting list for a transplant two weeks ago,” said a doctor from Fortis Hospital in Mulund where the transplant was carried out.

A team of doctors from the hospital rushed to Aurangabad on Tuesday morning, when Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee officials informed them about the availability of the organ.

The doctors extracted the heart and brought it to Mumbai in a chartered flight within one hour and thirty minutes. An ambulance waiting outside the city airport ferried it to the hospital.
