BKC hit-and-run: Police nail accused using CCTV

The accused told the police that an uknown biker knocked the victim down and fled.

The BKC police with help of local Crime branch unit cracked a 29 days old fatal hit-and-run accident case, where a biker allegedly driving at high speed knocked down a pedestrian in BKC and had fled from the spot after smartly hoodwinking the police, CCTV cameras on the stretch nailed his lie.

According to the BKC police, the incident occurred at around 6.30 pm on July 29 while the deceased Pravin Mahadik (31) was crossing the road on ILFS junction near Bharat nagar bus stop, which is marked as an accident prone spot by the BKC traffic police division.

Mahadik works in a private firm and had gone to BKC for work. While crossing the road the 19-year-old accused Ibrahim Ismail Shaikh, a resident of Azad nagar in Ghatkopar, speeding on a scooty knocked him down.

Due to the impact Mahadik fell and his head hit on the divider causing greivous internal head injuries. The BKC police rushed him to Bhabha hospital and shifted to KEM hospital where he died two days later. He is survived by his wife and a minor child.

The CCTVs showed that though he was riding a scooty he completed a nearly 300 metre stretch in 17 to 20 seconds, said an official. Shaikh has been booked for rash and negligent driving causing death under IPC and for escaping from the spot without rendering help under Motor Vehicles Act. He was granted bail.
