It was a double whammy for the commuters across Mumbai, as they not only had to wait for longer periods to book cabs but were also subjected to surge pricing by app-based cab aggregators Ola and Uber during morning peak hours on Tuesday.
Mumbaiites experienced commuting woes, as nearly 1,000 tourist taxi drives/owners affiliated with these app-based cab aggregators participated in the protest called by Tourist Taxi Union Sangharsh Chalak Malak Sanghathana at Azad Maidan. The strike will be called off by 4pm.
The drivers are protesting steadily reducing income, increasing penalties and a cut on the incentive policies at Ola and Uber. They are also upset over the state’s new rules under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules, 2017, for regulating app-based taxis and controlling surge pricing.

Criticising the protest, Sumeet Rao, Kharghar resident and a regular Ola user, said, “Instead of holding commuters to ransom, the union should fight out its differences with the government in the court.”
