A 53-year-old Congress corporator from Bhiwandi, on the outskirts of Mumbai, was brutally killed by eight masked men on Tuesday night.

Manoj Mhatre, a resident of Oswalwadi and Congress leader in Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation, reached his house at 9.30pm after attending a meeting. He got out of his car and his driver was parking the vehicle when around eight men carrying weapons and swords attacked him, said the police.

Two of the men caught hold of his driver and threatened him. The rest assaulted Mhatre with weapons. Deputy commissioner, Bhiwandi zone, Manoj Patil, said, “The assailants fired three rounds and one bullet hit Mhatre. His hand was also cut off. Mhatre was first taken to a nearby private hospital. But when his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane. He died during treatment.” The Narpoli police are investigating the case. They suspect more than eight men attacked Mhatre.

A police officer said Mhatre was attacked a year ago too. “He used to live in Kalwar village, but moved to Oswalwadi after the attack.” He is survived by his wife and son.
