Dog loses its leg in an accident on Mumbai railway tracks, locals give it a new lease of life

They rushed her to a local veterinary clinic, where her leg was surgically amputated and stitched up.

After a local train accidentally ran over a street dog along the Dahisar-Mira Road stretch on the western line, residents along the track rescued the bleeding dog, rushed her to an animal activist and ensured that she was treated within a couple of hours on Tuesday night.

Omkar Rane, animal activist from Dahisar, said, “Around 8.30pm, a group of people knocked on my door, holding a bleeding dog in severe pain and they asked for my help. I was shocked as the dog’s right leg was literally hanging from her body.”

“We rushed her to a local veterinary clinic, where her leg was surgically amputated and stitched up.”

Rane added that had it not been for these 30 residents living along the railway track, the dog would not have survived.

“While these people hardly have any money for themselves, their good intentions towards protecting this stray, needs to be noted.” The total expense of treatment amounted to Rs 25,000. She is currently up for adoption.

The incident comes two weeks after a similar incident. On November 28, a stray dog that accidentally entered the ladies compartment of a local train was allegedly beaten up by Railway Police Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel from Western Railways (WR) thrice during its five hour journey. The dog reportedly sustained multiple injuries and had to be treated immediately.
