Ahead of Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian new year, on Tuesday, Regional Transport offices (RTO) in the city have reported an increase in the registration of cars and bikes.Generally, customers prefer to get the new vehicles delivered on this day as they regard it auspicious.
Since last Monday, the Tardeo and Wadala RTO offices, that have jurisdiction of the Island city and eastern suburbs, have registered 1,530 and 1,137 new vehicles, respectively. Of the total number of vehicles registered at Tardeo, 963 were bikes and 430 cars, whereas 913 bikes and 224 cars were registered at the Wadala RTO.
Vehicle registration has seen a spike of 10% more than usual, ahead of Gudi Padwa celebrations, said RTO sources. Tardeo RTO has witnessed a registration of only 1,276 vehicles between March 13 and March 19, while it was just 916 vehicles at the Wadala RTO.
The number of cars and bikes registered at Andheri and Borivli RTOs was not available, but sources there said the registration of cars and bikes had seen a surge here too.
Gudi Padwa is the first day of the Hindu calendar year and is considered one of the most auspicious days for purchasing new property, vehicles and gold. A RTO official said that people prefer registering their vehicles early in the week, so that the they get delivered on the day.

{{/usCountry}}To facilitate registration of vehicles before Gudi Padwa, the motor vehicle department has kept RTO offices open on Saturday and Sunday. “RTO offices will remain open on Gudi Padwa too, but not much work is expected to take place on that day as people prefer to take deliveries then,” said an RTO source.
Vehicle registration at the city RTOs dropped last year, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his decision to scrap high value notes on November 8, said RTO sources. However, vehicle registration has again picked up since the beginning of this year.
