Maharashtra Congress all set for overhaul, to get new and young faces ahead of 2019 polls

The Maharashtra Congress is all set to overhaul its organisational set-up ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The party’s state president and member of parliament, Ashok Chavan, dissolved 12 cells, including social justice, higher and technical, Vimukta Jamati and Nomadic Tribes, urban development and teachers cells, on Monday, after a marathon meeting with the state executive committee of the party late last week.

The plan is to induct at least 50% new and young faces as block-level office-bearers.

Congress office-bearers have been asked to pull up their socks and be ready for the forthcoming elections. “The feedback during the review meetings by the state president showed that most of the cells were inefficient. Social cells will be reconstituted with at least 50% new faces active in organisational work. The state president also plans to overhaul block-level set-up, with at least 50% new faces. Although district-level bodies are to be appointed by internal elections, the party will ensure new faces get ample representation,” said a senior party functionary.

Meanwhile, the core committee of senior Congress leaders, including former chief minister Narayan Rane, Prithviraj Chavan, leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss the loan waiver announced by the state government and chalk out a strategy to expose the government on that front.
