Police said the accused and his friends were drunk. A traffic constable from Sahar stopped them during a routine check between 1 am and 2 am. The accused fought with police, but was overpowered and taken to a nearby police station, where he continued to misbehave, said police. He was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in police custody.

In another case of policemen being assaulted, a police sub-inspector from Santacruz suffered damage to his eardrum when he tried to nab a man accused of chain snatching in Vile Parle (West). The incident occurred around 5.45am, when the Santacruz police were conducting a nakabandi outside the Vile Parle railway station.

The accused, Shriniwas Gaikwad, 32, and his accomplice were sitting on bike a few metres away. “An officer spotted the accused when they brushed against a commuter. Police suspected them of being chain snatchers. Sub-inspector Wasim Shaikh confronted them, which led to a scuffle,” said senior inspector Shantanu Pawar of the Santacruz police station.

Gaikwad assaulted the officer, who suffered injuries to his eardrum and other parts of the body. Shaikh screamed for help, but no one came to his aid, said a police officer. “Shaikh alerted other policemen who were nearby. They arrested Gaikwad. However, his accomplice fled,” he added. Shaikh was taken to a hospital.
