MMRDA plans 2 roads on Mumbai University land to boost Bandra-Kurla Complex connectivity

In exchange, the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) generated on the said land will be sold to raise funds for improvement in the university’s infrastructure.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will acquire about 35,000 square metre land, which currently belongs to the University of Mumbai’s Kalina campus, to construct two roads to better the connectivity of business district of Bandra-Kurla Complex to the city.

In exchange, the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) generated on the said land will be sold to raise funds for improvement in the university’s infrastructure. TDR refers to development rights issued to a land owner as compensation for space ceded to the government for amenities.

“The TDR, generated after handing over the land to MMRDA, will be sold and used for the overall development of the university. This will include construction of hostels, staff quarters, guest houses, a science block and so on in an area measuring 3 lakh square metre approximately,” an MMRDA official said.

The authority will require the land for two projects. It will need 18,834 square metre of the university’s land to build a four-lane elevated road from the Bharat Diamond Bourse junction in the Bandra Kurla Complex to the Vakola junction.
