Mumbai civic body dumps trash at Bandra fair playground in morning, clears it in afternoon

Residents of buildings near the Mount Mary church steps, where hawkers have put up stalls for the Bandra fair, complained that a playground in the area was being used to dump garbage.

Residents of Monalisa Co-op Housing Society said the garbage dumped in Veer Jijamata Bhosale Kridangan had been a source of foul smell and insects since the week-long fair began on Sunday.

Later in the afternoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared the area.

“The playground is a temporary arrangement to collect additional garbage during the fair,” said H-West ward officer Sharad Ughade. “Until a year ago, the playground was used as a holding area (as a pick-up point) for waste during the fair. But this year, garbage collected from our society, Nirmala Colony, Sea Breeze and even Kadeshwari Marg is brought here,” said Anjali Kale, secretary, Monalisa Co-op Housing Society.

“The BMC is asking us to manage our waste otherwise they will not pick it up. But when they are unable to manage waste, how are they expecting us to come with a solution,” said Pias,adding that she had approached the BMC over waste management, but to no avail.

Ward officer Ughade said he would personally monitor waste management. “The issue will be resolved immediately,” he said.
