Mumbai civic body under fire for bad roads, but asks other agencies to maintain and repair 39 city roads

Mumbai city news: The BMC has released a list of 39 roads that fall under various government agencies, including Mumbai Metropolitan Region Authority (MMRDA), Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Airport authority

Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received flak for ill-maintained city roads, it sent a reminder to other government agencies to maintain roads falling in their jurisdiction during the monsoon.

Though the civic body is the primary agency that maintains and repairs roads, it is not the only government agency responsible for doing so. (HT)

The BMC has released a list of 39 roads that fall under various government agencies, including Mumbai Metropolitan Region Authority (MMRDA), Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Airport authority.

Though the civic body is the primary agency that maintains and repairs roads, it is not the only government agency responsible for doing so.

Some of the chronic flooding spots in the city fall under the jurisdiction of different government agencies other than the BMC. For instance the Sion Hospital Bridge between BA junction to Gandhi market, a 0.54-km stretch, falls under the MSRDC. The MMRDA has built three flyovers on the western express highway, but their maintenance was handed over to the PWD in 2016. The majority of the Eastern Expressway is looked after by the PWD. In addition, all six flyovers, except the Kurla flyover, are supposed to be looked after by the MSRDC.

Following the discussion over poor quality of roads and to introduce accountability, it has been discussed that the BMC will soon take control of even those roads built or maintained by other agencies.

While the civic body has written to different agencies, it is yet to repair 67% of priority roads under its ambit. These roads are prone to water-logging during. However, the BMC claims it has made all the roads motorable.
