Mumbai couple arrested for strangling neighbour who asked woman for her mobile number

The man was rushed to Rajawadi hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The Tilak Nagar police arrested a man and his wife for allegedly strangling their neighbour to death on Monday night purportedly because the deceased had asked the woman for her mobile number.

The arrested have been identified as Yashwant Ramu Zade, 35, and his wife Meena, 32, both residents of Krishna Menon Nagar on BY Thorat Marg in Chembur. The deceased, Rakesh Shinde, lived in the same vicinity and was known to the couple since a long time.

According to the police, Rakesh met Yashwant twice in the last two days and asked for his wife’s mobile number but when Yashwant asked why he wanted it, the victim refused to answer and left the scene.

On Monday morning, Rakesh visited Yashwant’s residence while the latter was not at home and asked Meena to share her mobile number with him but she refused, said a police officer.

Yashwant got angry after his wife informed him about Rakesh’s visit and immediately went to his residence to confront him. An argument ensued between them and Yashwant slapped Rakesh before returning to his home, added the official.

Meena then held his legs and Yashwant strangled him, said official. After hearing the commotion, the neighbours gathered at the scene and found Shinde unconscious. He was rushed to Rajawadi hospital but was declared dead before admission, said senior police inspector Vijay Khaire of the Tilak Nagar police station.
