Mumbai FYJC online admission process starts tomorrow: Forms to quota, all you need to know

Mumbai city news: Students remember, four rounds of admissions will be held, once every week, from June 15 to July 15

Merit lists wrongly listing toppers, students getting seats in colleges far away from their homes or not getting seats at all — last year, admission to junior colleges were riddled with errors.

As the admission process will start from June 2, here’s all you need to know:

NUMBER OF SEATS

Number of seats available in FYJC admissions this year: 2.92 lakh

Number of seats available in online admissions last year: 2.78 lakh

(For Mumbai region, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts)

TENTATIVE ADMISSION SCHEDULE

May 29: FYJC admissions portal is likely to open for student registrations

June 15 to July 15: Four rounds of admissions, once every week, after the SSC results are announced. If seats remain vacant, three additional rounds of admission will be held once every two weeks up to September 1.

July 16: FYJC classes to begin

WHAT IS NEW THIS YEAR

Buy FYJC online admission manual from schools. The manuals are likely to be distributed next week

Create a unique identification (UID) number by registering on the online admissions website by using the login and password provided in the book

The UID number will be used to track admissions of students

When a junior college admits a student through a quota, they will have to enter the UID number on the online database

THE PROCESS

Admissions to the reserved seats will be conducted before the general seats

A ‘zero round’ will be conducted for online admissions to the Higher Secondary Vocational Course (HSVC) and quota seats – religious or linguistic minority, in-house and management

If seats remain vacant, they will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

FOR GENERAL CATEGORY STUDENTS

You can apply to only one stream, instead of the earlier two

You can change your choice of stream during admissions

The choice of junior colleges will not be restricted to zone or wards. Students can pick a minimum of one and a maximum of 10 colleges in their region

There are no provisional admissions this year. Students can secure admission only once

If a student is allotted his first preference, he must pay the fees and secure the seat, as they will not be allotted seats in further rounds.

Those happy with the seat allotted to them can also pay fees and confirm their seat

Only those who don’t take admission in any college can wait for further rounds

There is no guarantee that students will get a better seat in the next round

STUDENTS FROM INTERNATIONAL BOARDS

Students appearing for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations, which are equivalent to class 10, will be allowed to secure provisional admissions to first year junior colleges (FYJC) on their predicted scores

However, it is unclear whether the seat will be cancelled later if the student’s actual score is lower than the predicted one

RESERVATION FOR GIRLS

Around 30% seats in online admissions will be reserved for girl students from poor backgrounds

The seats will be available in the form of ‘compartmentalised reservation’ in the existing 50% quota for socially weaker sections followed in non-minority colleges

It will not be compulsory for minority colleges

OTHER RESERVATIONS

20%: In-house quota

5%: management quota

19%: other backward classes (OBC)

13%: scheduled castes (SC)

7% : scheduled tribes (ST)

8%: nomadic tribes

3%: de-notified tribes

2%: special backward classes (SBC)

50%: minority quota only in minority colleges

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHILE FILLING ONLINE APPLICATIONS

Subjects offered by every college will be listed next to its name. This will include bifocal and vocational courses and the number of seats available for them. This will help students make an informed choice

Shorter college codes: College codes, which the aspirant enters into the online application form, have been shortened this year, so students write them correctly. Colleges located in Mumbai, for instance, will start with the college code-MUM. This will prevent students from accidentally choosing wrong colleges or those that are far from their homes
