The Mumbai police have upgraded security given to singer Sonu Nigam and two BJP MLAs after receiving intelligence from J&K police about threat to their lives.

A senior IPS officer from Mumbai police said the intelligence was shared by the J&K police recently. He added the J&K police, while questioning a suspect arrested in Kashmir, learnt about a possible attack on Nigam and the two MLAs after which Mumbai police and state intelligence department (SID) were alerted.

Additional commissioner of police (Protection) RD Shinde said he cannot recollect the number police personnel protecting the trio before they received the alert.

In April 2017, Nigam courted controversy over a tweet in which he complained of ‘forced religiousness’ on being woken up by azaan even though he is not a Muslim.
