A 41-year-old woman died of swine flu on Thursday taking the toll of H1N1 deaths in the city this year to 16. The woman’s family — her husband and three children — has been advised to stay away from home until they conduct a pest control operation.

After Malti Nag, who lived in Borivli’s Yogi Nagar area, died of the disease, a team of doctors survey the building she lived in. “We have been advised to enter the house only after conducting a pest control operation. This is quite strange because she kept the house absolutely clean and we had also whitewashed the flat last month,” said Suryanath Nag, 46, Malti’s husband.

“She had a mild fever and cough for the past two weeks. She took medicines for three days and then felt fine. But after two days she had to be taken to hospital when she started coughing severely,” he added.

Malti was taken to Sailee Hospital in Borivli where she was diagnosed with swine flu. She was rushed to Kasturba Hospital in Parel, where she died after she was kept on ventilator for two days.

Doctors from Kasturba Hospital said the patient’s condition was extremely poor when she came to them. “The patient was suffering from classic condition of swine flu and her health worsened gradually after she was shifted here. We did continue the medication and put her on ventilator for mechanical support but she died after two days,” said a doctor from the hospital.
