Around 2.41 lakh cases, mostly in the pre-litigation stage, were settled amicably in the National Lok Adalats held across Maharashtra on December 9. The settled cases involved disputes amounting to a total of Rs 602 crore, the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) said.

As per the statistics released by the MSLSA, that makes up one-fourth of the 10,43,0116 cases placed before the National Lok Adalats. What is significant is that most of the cases that were settled were pre-litigation ones, that is, cases that are filed with legal services authorities before the disputes are taken to appropriate courts by the parties concerned.
Of the 2,41,388 settled cases, 80 per cent were pre-litigation cases; the remaining 41,193 cases had been referred for settlement in the National Lok Adalats by various courts.
The highest success rate was recorded in Nashik district, where 1,27,004 cases — roughly one-third of the total 3,67,850 cases placed before the National Lok Adalats — were settled amicably. Pune follows with a total 1.08 lakh cases of which 30,153 were settled, and then Satara district, which saw a 20 per cent success rate with 20,773 cases settled, of a total 1.02 lakh.
One of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, Lok Adalat is a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled. National Lok Adalats are held at regular intervals where on a single day Lok Adalats are held throughout the country, wherein a large number of cases are disposed off.
