A day after Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray discussed their future in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Thackeray announced that Sena will be contesting all the upcoming elections alone, without joining hands with its oldest ally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing a function at Paithan in Aurangabad, Thackeray spared no words to target the BJP. “From the last 25 years, we helped nurture your base and took all your tantrums, but not anymore. We will contest all elections on our own, and win them with larger margins. We allied with the BJP just to avoid the division of Hindu votes but they betrayed us,” said Uddhav, who inaugurated crushing season of a sugarcane factory on Sunday.
The Sena chief also said despite being the part of the government, he will continue to criticize his ally in the interest of the common man. Uddhav also poked fun at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that the benefits of the schemes announced by him hardly reach the masses.
The Sena had a few days back already announced that it would be contesting the general and assembly elections alone. For years, the Sena played the role of the big brother of the alliance. However, it all changed during the 2014 assembly polls, when both the parties contested separately, and BJP won larger number of seats than the Sena. Though the two parties are now allies in the state and the Centre, Sena believes that the BJP has been trying to sideline it. The Shiv Sena alleges that in the central government it has been given an insignificant portfolio, while in the state its ministers are not been given a free hand in governance.
