South Mumbai robbery: Woman had jewellery at home for grandson’s wedding

Unidentified men gag, assault 63-year-old, walk away with gold jewellery and cash worth ₹10 lakh

The elderly woman, who was robbed of cash and valuables worth Rs10 lakh on Friday, did not usually keep jewellery at their Charni Road home, said police. However, they had recently taken jewellery out of their bank locker for their grandson’s wedding. “During preliminary probe, Meena Jain told investigators that she had taken her ornaments out of the locker since her grandson’s wedding was approaching. Jain gave us a description of the suspects, and we are trying to nab them,” said a police officer.

Jain, 63, in the FIR said that she was alone at home on Friday evening, when someone knocked on the door on the pretext of a delivery. When she opened the door, she was pushed inside, and two people entered the house. One of them sprayed something into her eyes, which made them burn and affected her ability to see properly, she said.

One of the robbers then gagged Jain and said, “Give me the keys to the cupboard, or else we will kill you.” When she handed them the keys, they opened the cupboard in the bedroom, and started keeping the ornaments in a bag.

One of them took a saree from the cupboard and tied Jain’s hands and legs. “They also covered my mouth and eyes with tape, and then took off my gold earrings,” Jain said in the FIR.

Police suspect the involvement of an insider who could have tipped the robbers off about the gold. Cops are also checking CCTVs in the area, which may have captured the suspects entering or escaping the building.
