MUMBAI: In comparison to 2015, a sharp decline in the number of govindas sustaining injuries during dahi handi celebrations was registered this year. Statistics available with the civic body’s disaster management cell revealed that 150 people got injured during dahi handi celebrations on Thursday, out of which only 45 needed hospitalisation. Last year, 364 injuries and 39 admissions were reported across civic hospitals, said officials from the disaster management cell.

A 13-year-old boy from Ulhasnagar sustained heavy injuries after falling from the sixth tier of a human pyramid while playing dahi handi. Sujay Ghadapkar was first rushed to a nearby hospital and then shifted to Fortis Hospital Kalyan for further treatment. Doctors said that the teenager is critical and is on ventilator as of now.

While most patients admitted at the hospitals were above 20, Dharavi resident Prati Koriya,15, was rushed to Sion hospital after fracturing one of his femurs (thighbones) while climbing a human pyramid with his friends. “The patient was not climbing a pyramid at an event organised by a mandal,” said a doctor.

Doctors at Sion hospital said maximum cases they treated were of fractures and sprains . “Fractures and sprain of lower extremities were the commonest causes of admissions and checkups. Besides, a few of the patients also complained of dehydration and blackouts due to over-exertion. But everybody was stable,” said a doctor from Sion hospital.
