MUMBAI: The Santacruz police arrested two women on Sunday for allegedly possessing 4 kgs of marijuana. A probe found that the women were supplied the drug and their job was to pack it in small pouches for dealers to sell it to college students in the area.
The police are trying to trace the source of the consignment. The seized drugs worth Rs30,000 will be sent to the forensic lab at Kalina.
The police said both women, Lata Kale, 30, and Varsha Kale, 24, do not have criminal records, but some of their relatives have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act earlier.
“The investigation found that the women got the drug from a man. We are now looking for him,” Shantanu Pawar, senior inspector of Santacruz police station.
The Santacruz police acted after a tip-off about a consignment of drugs that was to be delivered in their jurisdiction. A team laid a trap to catch the two women from Indira Nagar, where the two women live.
The women were been booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and have been sent to judicial custody.
