Tikekar, who contributed to the intellectual life of Mumbai and Maharashtra in the past four decades through his vast collection of essays, editorials, opinion articles and books, died on January 19.
The centre will be dedicated to nurturing scholars and generating research in fields such as history, local history, society, culture, language, and journalism, erstwhile Bombay Presidency and Maharashtra, among others. The centre will also organise workshops, seminars and book exhibitions.

The subjects chosen for the inaugural year are the three closest to his work: history of Maharashtra, local history, erstwhile Bombay Presidency.
