150 exotic bird species to be displayed in Mumbai

The exhibition, hosted by an independent organisation World of Wings, will be held at Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga, from Thursday onwards.

Soon, Mumbaiites will be able to feast their eyes on around 150 species of exotic birds from around the tropical world. The exhibition, hosted by an independent organisation World of Wings, will be held at Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga, from Thursday onwards.

“These birds are from South Africa, Brazil, Australia and Nigeria, among other countries. This exhibition aims at delighting as well as educating children about birds,” said Laukik Soman, an organiser. The exhibition has been organised with the permission of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).

Among the very rare species on display will be parrotlets. These birds, which are among the smallest parrots, have a stocky build and short tails. They are endemic to Middle and South America. “In Mumbai, one commonly sees only crows, pigeons and sparrows. To see 150 rare birds is a great opportunity,” said Divakar Satam, a wildlife enthusiast.

Likewise, the owl finch is a lively addition to a community aviary. The double-barred finch is a bird from the dry savannah - tropical (lowland) dry grassland and shrub-land habitats in northern and eastern Australia. They are sometimes referred to as Bicheno's finch, owing to the dark ring of feathers around their faces.
