On December 8, 196 municipal councils in Maharashtra will go to polls. The date was announced by election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan, in Nagpur on Tuesday.

With the announcement, the state and local agencies in these areas cannot take decisions on new proposals, as the model code of conduct has been put in place. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, in a media interaction last week, said that keeping this in mind, he had requested all departments to put through pending and urgent proposals for these areas, which were cleared in the cabinet meeting last week.
The 196 municipal councils include councils and panchayats in Pune, Nashik, Raigad and Aurangabad.
“We have improved the way polling booths will be organised. They will be located within 2km of voters’ residence. To avoid huge queues, the commission has decided to restrict the voter list at each booth to 600,” Satyanarayan said. Facilities like toilets will be ensured at booths. A ramp will be built, for senior citizens and the differently-abled.
