In less than 24 hours, two incidents of chain snatching were reported across the western suburbs of Mumbai.

On Monday, a 35-year-old woman was robbed of two gold chains by two unidentified men on a motorcycle in Vile Parle (East).

The police said the victim, Deepa Vijendra Shakhdipi, a resident of Dahisar (East), was on her way home in a taxi from her workplace at Kalina when the incident occurred.

“Around 5pm on Monday, Shakhdipi was travelling in a taxi at Hanuman Road in Vile Parle (East) when two unidentified men on a motorcycle appeared on her side of the vehicle. The pillion rider snatched her chain and fled the spot,” said inspector S Varal of Vile Parle police station.

As the two unidentified accused tried to flee the spot, Shakhdipi, a research analyst at a firm in Kalina, directed the taxi driver to follow them. “We did follow them for a distance, but because they were on a motorbike, they escaped easily,” said Shakhdipi. Shakhdipi, who lost two chains collectively worth Rs90,000 in the incident, then filed a complaint with the Vile Parle police station.

The victim, Shobha Meena Saliyan, a resident of Kajupada in Sakinaka, was waiting for a rickshaw near her friend’s residence when the incident occurred.

“While Saliyan was waiting for a rickshaw in Sundarnagar at Kalina in Santacruz (West) to go back home, an unidentified man came running towards her, snatched her chain and fled on a bike with an accomplice who was waiting for him at a close distance,” said sub inspector V Salgaonkar of Vakola police station.
