25-yr-old drunk driver arrested for injuring tea vendor in Bandra

Less than a month after the Janhavi Gadkar case, a 25-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for injuring a tea vendor while driving drunk on Carter Road in Bandra, Mumbai.

Nidhi Parekh, a chief fashion co-ordinator, was coming back from a friend’s birthday party when the accident took place.

Around 2.30am on Tuesday, Parekh, a Vile Parle resident, was driving her Chevrolet car on Carter Road when she crashed into Vijay Shahani, who sells tea on a bicycle. Unable to control her vehicle, she hit a parked autorickshaw and a Santro car before coming to a halt. Her medical reports later proved she was under the influence of alcohol, said the police.

The incident took place near the police chowky on the promenade opposite Café Coffee Day.

According to the complainant Shahani, who sustained injuries in the accident, Parekh hit his bicycle from the rear end, throwing him off the two-wheeler onto the ground.

A few minutes later, the police were informed and a van reached the spot within five minutes, officers from the Khar police station said. The woman was then taken to the hospital for a medical test.

Shahani sustained injures on his hands, legs and face. Parekh, however, managed to escape without any major injuries, officers said. Shahani’s statement was recorded and he was later discharged.

The Khar police have registered a case against Parekh for rash driving and causing hurt under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and under the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Parekh was arrested later on Tuesday morning and eventually released on bail. The medical report has suggested she had consumed alcohol before driving,” said an officer from the Khar police station.

Following the June 9 accident on the Eastern Freeway involving advocate Janhavi Gadkar, which claimed two lives, the police have decided to adopt stringent measures against motorists found driving drunk.
