5 from city win fully-funded postgraduate scholarships

These five city students are among 60 winners from across the country who will be able to pursue these dreams, studying at universities in the United Kingdom (UK) this year on the newly announced Jubilee Scholarships.

The five winners will be going to the University of Warwick, Imperial College, King’s College and Manchester Business School. Costs for a year of study, all expenses included, usually exceed Rs30 lakh.

“It would have been a Rs40 lakh expenditure for me which would have been very expensive,” said Joseph, 23, who just finished a Bachelor in Engineering from Maharashtra Institute of Technology and is now headed to King’s College. “However, now I don’t have to spend anything.”

The programme is being launched by the British Council and the UK government. Ten of the 60 students who have received the scholarship are from Maharashtra. Students were informed that they had got the scholarship at the end of June. Most will leave for the UK in the next few weeks.

“I see myself getting into human resources consultancy, with the working population in India set to grow in the years to come,” said Aditi Gala, 21, who finished her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mithibai College, Vile Parle. “Warwick is one of the best universities for the course I want to pursue.”

While three of the Mumbai students are from an engineering background, the other two are from an arts background.

“In my final year I got interested in robotics and after I finish studying I want to get into the field of consumer robotics, developing robotics for day-to-day use,” said Rushabh Doshi, 22, who graduated from DJ Sanghvi Engineering College and will be going to King’s College in London.
