ACB court orders FIR, probe into graft charges against top cops

A special ACB court on Monday ordered the agency to register an FIR and investigate charges of corruption against former and current top police officers and a government employee, levelled by an assistant sub-inspector.

A special anti-corruption bureau (ACB) court on Monday ordered the agency to register an FIR and investigate charges of corruption against former and current top police officers and a government employee, levelled by an assistant sub-inspector.

Baban Jadhav, in his complaint, said he was being targeted by other officials because he took a stand against corruption prevailing in the police department.

The application was filed against MN Singh, former commissioner of police, Surya Gupta, former deputy commissioner of police (DCP), special branch, Ahmad Javed, former joint commissioner of police, law and order, who is now the additional director general of police, law and order, Vishwas Salve, former DCP, headquarter 2, Vilas Shinde, former inspector, Chembur police station and currently working as assistant commissioner of police in Navi Mumbai, PM Wankhede, desk officer in the irrigation department.

“The court order states that an investigation needs to be carried out to see the merits in our case. According to 156 (3) of the CRPC, an offence will be registered, investigation will be done and a report will be filed in the court,” said Ashish Mehta, Jadhav’s lawyer.

It further said Jadhav wrote to the state home department in June 2000, following which an order was passed allowing him to file a complaint.
The application also alleged that the department made him a scapegoat by filing a false case against him.

Jadhav alleged that Singh even conspired to kill him in a false encounter. “On November 29, 2002, around 6pm, a police officer informed Jadhav that Singh and Shinde planned to kill him at his residence at Vartak Nagar, Thane, between November 29-30, 2002,” the application said.
