Assam chief minister undergoes cardiac surgeries in city

A team of 20 doctors, led by cardiac surgeon Dr Ramakant Panda, conducted the seven-hour procedure, which was completed at 4 pm.

The doctors performed a bypass surgery to correct 70 to 90 per cent blockage in two blood vessels and another surgery to replace an aortic valve that had degenerated.

The CM had started experiencing respiratory problems on July 24 while attending a National Development Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.

He was rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi, where he was diagnosed with two blocks and was brought to Mumbai for surgery last Friday.

Apart from the fact that we had to perform two major surgeries at the same time, Gogoi's case was complex for various reasons, said doctors.

He added that they had conducted extensive pre-op tests and taking various precautions to ensure the Operation Theatre was aseptic.

“The CM is doing well. He should be able to get back to managing the state within three to four weeks,” said Dr Panda, who had performed bypass on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and many other politicians from the northeastern state visited Gogoi’s family at Asian Heart as he is not allowed to have visitors in the ICU.
